Cubs Hold Off
Late Rally To Pick Up First Win Of Season
The Charleston Cubs
picked up their first win of the season Sunday by defeating the Summerville
Yankees 10-9. The Yanks jumped out early with a three run 1st inning. But the
Cubs answered with two in the first and 5 in the second to get out to an early
7-3 lead. The Cubs added three more runs in the fourth which would prove to be
the difference. Late in the game the Yankees scrapped back into it coming
within one run in the ninth. With a runner at third an no outs, Feltman lined a
shot down the third base line which was caught by Cubs' Third Baseman Mike
Jakubowski who dove back to the back to get the double play. Jay Alexander
(1-1) pitched 5 strong to pick up his first win of the season. Alexander struck
out 9 and gave up three earned runs. Ralph Nolen, Jr. came in and threw 4 solid
innings to ick up his 1st save of the season. At the plate for the Cubs, Alexander
helped his own cause by goin 2-3 and driving in 4 runs. John Thompson was 1-3
and scored 3 runs in his CMABL debut. The Yankees were led offensively by
newcomer Michael Bender who was 3-5 with a HR, 2B, and 3 runs scored. Corey
Morris was also 3-4 and scored a run for the Yanks.
