Homerun Dashes Cubs Hopes Of Early Season Upset
In
a day that was filled with overcast skies the Charleston Cubs took the field
for the 1st game of the regular season against the Charleston Reds Sunday. The
Cubs jumped out to an early 3-1 lead through the 4th inning. However, the Reds
would not go quietly as Donnie Smith led the charge with a 3-run homerun in the
top of the 5th and then added two more runs in the 6th to seal the victory.
Despite a fine outing, staring pitcher Jay Alexander(0-1) takes his first loss
of the season. Alexander was the lone bright spot for the Cubs at the plate as
well going 3-4 with a double and and RBI.
